Rocket Launch Event CANCELED!

Posted on Fri, Jun 7, 2013

SOAR has canceled their event for the weekend.

SOAR ROCKETRY, the organizers of the launch this weekend, have officially canceled their event for this weekend at the Atlanta Dragway. (www.SOARrocketry.com). The next scheduled launch event is Saturday, September 14th at Mill Springs Academy from 10am-3pm, in the back field.

---

Pack 459's first summertime event was held on Saturday, June 8th. About 30 people from Pack 459 came out for the fun,as we joined the organizers of SoAR (Southern Area Rocketry) for an awesome rocket launching experience. Photos are posted on our website.

There were rockets of all sizes and colors, but the Estes Puma rockets ("the screaming bananas") were fastest off the launch pad, and flew nearly out of sight every time. That's quite a nice surprise for the "beginner" rockets! And we recovered nearly every rocket in good condition. Also a nice surprise!

For those who want to continue model rocketry as a hobby, you can find a selection of rockets, launch pads, motors (engines) and parts at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Both stores have apps that regularly offer coupons of up to 40% off.

THE BIG ONE!

If you thought this launch was fun, you'll defintely want to plan to drive up to the Atlanta Dragway (near the Tanger Outlets on I-85 in Commerce, GA) on the weekend of August 17-18. This is a high-altitude launch, with rockets permitted to fly up to 4,000 feet. The feature attraction will be the launch of a 14' tall Saturn V replica rocket, complete with a launch pad and tower like the original Saturn V program. You can see videos of those launches on YouTube -- and this will be a great re-creation of that experience.

The event is scheduled for two days -- Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August 18th. If everything goes as planned (including favorable weather conditions), the Saturn Rocket will launch sometime around 12-1pm. This is a "don't miss" event! You can also bring your own rockets and motors to launch at the event -- and you can load the BIG engines this time, as the dragway offers plenty of open space for recovery.

Also, you can check the SoAR website (www.soarrocketry.com) for more information about this and other launches planned.
