Pack-Away Trip to the USS Yorktown (Updated 2/23)

Pack 459’s spring 2015 pack-away trip will be to the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC on the weekend of Feb. 28th! The Trip is SOLD OUT!

For more than 25 years, the Camping Program on board the USS YORKTOWN continues to be one of the nation's top education adventures. Scouts and their Parent will experience the majesty of the USS YORKTOWN, sleep in the berthing areas where the sailors once slept, learn about naval and aviation history and have an amazing time. Here are the quick details;

New information added 2/23:

  • This trip is SOLD OUT.

Dates:

  • Check-in @ 8:30 AM on Saturday, February 28th.

    • It is highly recommended you drive to Charleston on Friday night and stay at a hotel so you can check-in at the Yorktown Saturday morning. More info to come on this.
  • Spend all day @ Patriot’s Point
  • Camp overnight onboard the USS Yorktown
  • Depart 9AM Sunday, March 1st.

  • Every Scout must have an accompanying Parent in the Tiger, Wolf and Bear Ranks.
  • A reservation = a completed payment.

What will we do?

Activities include self-guided tours, meals and entertainment, and an on-site educational program focused upon Aviation! Here is a Quick Overview:

  • Saturday 8:30 AM arrival to Sunday 9:00 AM departure
    • Saturday night camping onboard the YORKTOWN
    • Meals included:

    • Movies in the ship’s theater
    • Self-guided tours of ships berthed at Patriots Point
      • Aircraft Carrier YORKTOWN

    • Vietnam Naval Support Base (self-guided)
    • Patriots Point Onsite Program
    • Scouting Patch for each camper
    • Aviation Program

Aviation Program

The Aviation program introduces Scouts to the history and development of Aviation using the unique resources found at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. After an introduction to Aviation program in our ship’s theater, scouts go out to the Hangar Bay and complete a preflight inspection on one of our planes. Next, all participants will build a model FPG 9 with materials we provide. Once built, the Scouts will have a working model to help them with the discussion of flight principals.

Bring the Family for the Daytime on Saturday!

Members of your family can come for the day on Saturday as a regular visitor at Patriot's Point. Regular Visiting hours are from 9AM until 6PM. For more information and to buy tickets: http://www.patriotspoint.org/plan_your_visit/

More information about potential hotels for Friday Night, opening up reservations to more people (if possible) , etc. to come soon. Campers will receive more information as we approach the pack-away date.

Hotels:

Several families have told me they plan to drive to Charleston Friday night, stay in a hotel on Friday night, all will enjoy the Yorktown / Patriot’s Point on Saturday, then the Scout(s) and a parent will sleep aboard the Yorktown Saturday night while the rest of the family stays Saturday night in a hotel, and all will meet-up again on Sunday morning.
